The Real Deal

Ghost hunting is exciting.  There's no doubt about that.  You have to have a certain degree of guts to turn off the lights and ask things that you can't see to come touch you and let you know that they're there.  Most times it doesn't happen.  In fact, in my experience paranormal activity is very rare, whether its caught on audio, video or simply a personal experience.  Getting a true taste of the supernatural is hard to achieve.  But when you are lucky enough to be in the presence of forces you cannot explain, the other times you bust out are quickly forgotten.

My job is to capture the moments offered to us on film.  We've been to several interesting locations.  You would expect the "special" sites which are old and shrouded in history, particulary macabre history to have a lasting impression in the supernatural realm.  As if simply going there at night should be like buying a golden ticket that says, "You will definitly have your socks knocked off by a spirit here."  This isn't always the case.  I've been to locations where scores of people, whether huge believers or cynical skeptics have sworn to see and hear crazy things that they cannot explain.  Locations with lore and history and legend to intrigue the most veteran of paranormal researchers only to switch off the camera in 8 hours; tired, cramped and completely unfulfilled.  Afterwards, when we study the evidence, there simply wasn't anything there.  A huge let down.

Then one day you get a call to go to some house thats only been standing for twenty years in an urban setting, with no real history or stories except from the clients who invite you in.  Your typical house down the street, you pass a thousand of them a day.   And suddenly, within a couple of hours on site, to your amazement the proverbial shit is hitting the paranormal fan.  You find yourself surrounded by the real deal.  The goosebumps raise, your eyes water in fear, you stare wild eyed at your instruments as their lights dance a ballet that could only mean something unseen is in close proximity.  And you know you have yourself a hit!!

I admit I'm a gambling man.  And this job is a gamble.  Each time you go out on assignment you're committing precious time with your collegues, spinning a paranormal roulette wheel hoping that your supernatual chips get paid off.  But like a casino, usually you lose.  Its just that simple.  Some groups may like embellishing their experiences or interpreting their investigation as to make MOST places they study seem active with spiritual goings on.  We are different.  If its not there, its not there.

But remember.  The spooky derelict house thats lied in ruins for centuries in your part of the world, the house that children fear to pass during the daylight because they've heard stories of bad things living in there; they are certainly no more likely to spawn a spiritual presence then say...the house next door or down the street.   There is no blueprint for where spirits tread. They can be anywhere even in the most humble and cozy of settings.  No matter where they are, we'll continue to look for them.  And hopefully the next assignment will be another Real Deal.
